Since it may help you make your decision about whom to hire, I'd like to answer some questions that you should be asking of any consultant.
How long have you been a consultant?
I have spent over 9 years working in custom software development and database design. 5 years were spent as a consultant at a Microsoft Solutions Provider here in Phoenix, Arizona.
How did you get started?
Originally a Quality Engineer, I got involved with software related to statistics and failure analysis. Intrigued, I started taking courses in management in information systems and database design. I made the leap to software development after my spouse accepted a position in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Why did you decide to become a consultant?
It was a great opportunity to learn about a variety of industries. The opportunity to listen, learn and analyze the needs of a business then help them meet their goals, through information technology, is immensely satisfying.
How did you develop your niche?
My core values of knowledge, work ethic and honesty resonate with my clients and their staff. A number of clients have told me that they appreciate that I am not just doing a job, but am truly interested in their success as well.
Are you certified?
Yes. I have two Microsoft Certifications, one in SQL Server and another in Analyzing Requirements and Defining Solution Architectures. In April of 2008, I achieved the Arizona State Project Management Certification. This is the equivalent of the Project Management Professional (PMP) certification from the Project Management Institute.
How do you find clients?
Most of my clients find me through referrals, this website or my blog.
How do you market your services?
Pay per click ads on major search engines is typical. Cold sales calls never happen.
What's your greatest challenge as a consultant?
Keeping up with the latest in technology trends. There are only so many hours in a day to learn AND apply.
What would you miss most if you quit consulting?
The opportunity to meet entrepreneurs and innovators.
